Baa Baa's Game a Big Success!
Despite the threat of wet weather and a couple of late changes to the Baa Baa's side, the Gold Coast Rugby Community turned out in force for the Australian Barbarians v. Canada match at Skilled Park on Friday the 26th of August. Not only was this the first ever Rugby Union match at Skilled Park but it was the perfect showpiece event for the ARU to trial the stadium as we get closer to the Australian leg of the HSBC 7's World Series to be held at Skilled PArk on November 25 & 26.
Both teams played well in the soggy conditions and many of our Wallabies hopefulls put their best foot forward in an effort to gain selection in the Rugby World Cup sides to face Italy, Ireland, USA and Russia over the course of teh RWC in September before moving in to the final stages in October.
The match was watched by a healthy crowd of 4,124 including many Rugby Gold Coast Juniors watching their first ever Rugby International. Following the game Rugby Gold Coast Development manager Ralf de la Mare noted that "it was fantastic to be able to showcase our great code on the Gold Coast and to be able to promote the game through schools and local clubs without having to ask people to travel up to Brisbane! I haven't been to Skilled park since it was under construction and to see it now, filled with Wallabies jerseys, is a big step forward for Rugby on the Gold Coast. We now look forward to international Rugby continuing here with the HSBC 7's in November and the Wallabaies v. Argentina test match in 2012".
As well as opening the doors to the public with ticket prices as cheap as $10, Rugby Gold Coast was also able to use the corporate facilities to test the waters of the Gold Coast's corporate market with Corporate Box and Suite sales exceeding expectations. RGC was also able to donate a Box to each of the 14 Gold Coast Rugby Clubs which many then used to reward their valued committee members, volunteers and sponsors.
Amonst the Corporate Box and Suite holders were three lucky winners who increased their fill of Rugby for the weekend by winning tickets to the Tri-Nations decider in Brisbane on Saturday the 27th. RGC General Manager: Commercial, Tim Heath added that he "would like to congratulate Col McDonald, Terry Langton and Reg Williams as the lucky recipients of those tickets to the recent Tri-Nations decider at Suncorp. These three strong supporters of Rugby Gold Coast received the tickets as the winners of the draw after purchasing a Corporate Box at the first Rugby International at Skilled Stadium between the Australian Barbarians and Canada".
All in all it was a great night for Rugby and we can't wait for the next one!
