The History of Gold Coast Premier Rugby

The Gold Coast Breakers Rugby Club was formed in 1997 to provide a representative pathway for talented local players seeking higher representative honours. The Club participates in the QRU Premier and Brisbane Division 1

Rugby competitions, playing against the strong , traditional  Brisbane based clubs, Brothers, University , GPS,  Souths,  Wests, Sunshine Coast, Norths, Easts and Sunnybank. Before the formation of the Club, talented Gold Coast players had to travel, on average, at least 600 km each week to train and play with a Brisbane based club.

In the brief period of its history, the Club has achieved outstanding success, having played in Premier Grand Finals on four occasions viz 2001, 2003, 2004 and 2005.

The Club was successful in winning its first Premier Championship in 2004, having been defeated by the professional; Brumby studded Canberra Vikings in its two previous Grand Final appearances. Although minor premiers in 2005 when we defeated Sunnybank in the last competition match, the positions were reversed on grand-final day when Sunnybank prevailed at Ballymore to take the Premier Rugby title.

In all it was a moderately successful year for the Club with First Grade making the semi-finals, only to be defeated by the ultimate winners Souths in a closely fought match. The Colts missed the semis on a countback with University, who went on to take the title for 2005. Both First Grade and Colts should have done better in 2005 but failed to take their chances when opportunities were presented.

The 2006 Colts qualified for the semi finals and were unlucky not to advance further, when they played a 22-22 draw with GPS in the preliminary final, with GPS proceeding to the Grand Final and an easy premiership victory. Premier and First Grade both experienced difficult years, although a number of young players showed great potential for the future. The commitment of the players to give their all could not be faulted. The 2007 season presents the Club with a new range of opportunities, when we will again field three elite teams in the Queensland and Brisbane competitions.
