Post Xmas rugby is now well and truly under way for the RGC Breakers, with our busy schedule including conditioning, skill work, and latterly, game time.

While we are still working with our wider training group,  recent Country matches (against Townsville and Cairns) and the PBC Tens tournament, have been very useful in helping us measure player potential,  we are now getting close to our final selections for the Premier competition.

All of the boys have really put in, and I cannot fault the attitude towards the team, it is a very positive sign for the season. We have a weekend break (from playing) coming up, with no formal match scheduled (March 6th), but we have planned what will be a fairly intense game strategy and training session for the Saturday afternoon.

The team then has a full playing schedule with our next match (Country) against Rockhampton to be played at Helensvale on Saturday March 13th, followed by a hit out against Sunnybank mid week (March 17th – again at Albert Park), then a bit of a marathon trip to Goondawindi to play Darling Downs on March 20th (also a Country match).

Our final match before a break over Easter will be against our old foe the ‘Stingrays’ from the Sunshine Coast (March 27th at Albert Park).

This home game is shaping up as a beauty, doubling as a Premier competition match, and a Qld Country match.

Looking at current standings in the Qld Country championship, this match could also quite possibly shape as the title decider.

I understand that the Stingrays have been very proactive in their 2010 recruitment drive, importing a number of quality players from New Zealand – so we are keenly looking forward to the challenge.

As RGC we have also been proactive in bringing new talent to the surface, proudly, this talent has been  developed and nurtured right here on our doorstep.

We have some really interesting prospects in Jay Halevu, (backrow),  Phil Dumelow (winger) and Luke Dumas (centres).

Add a fine talent from last year’s RGC Colts in Sef Fa’agase(prop), to  talented Australian schoolboy representatives in Jarrad Butler(backrower), Ruka Hanlon(halfback), Jack Kimmence(prop), and Ross Morais(hooker), gets me thinking our RGC rugby future is looking very bright.

Also great to see Dave Mahanga and the Premier Colts training hard and gathering some good momentum for their lead in to the Premier season.

There are some very talented footballers in this squad – worth watching for the future as well.

I look forward to catching up soon.

Yours in rugby
